Principal's Message

                                                   Home of The Heritage Hawks

                                                         A Bridge to the Future

Greeting from Heritage Intermediate School – Home of the Hawks!

My name is Laura Rowland and it is an honor to be the Principal of this wonderful school.  We continue to be the largest middle school in the Etiwanda School District with a projected student enrollment of 1,250 students for the 2008-2009 school year.  Our administrative team consists of two Assistant Principals and an Academic Administrator.  Additionally, we have 54 certificated teachers, a Speech and Language Pathologist, and over 50 support personnel.

At Heritage Intermediate School, all students are placed in classes based upon various assessment data for English Language Arts and Mathematics.  Advanced, Benchmark, Strategic, and Intensive courses are offered to ensure all student’s academic needs are met.  Students needing intensive intervention in the area of literacy are placed in the Language! program.  Additionally, 8th grade students needing intervention in math are placed in an Algebra Readiness course.  This class prepares the student for Algebra 1 as he/she transitions to the high school.  In the event a student needs to take Geometry, Heritage does collaborate with local High School so that students have the opportunity to attend this high school level course.

Heritage Intermediate offers an Exploratory Elective Wheel.  Students rotate through various electives every twelve weeks.  Some of the electives include:  Study Skills, Computers, Art, Career Ed., Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, French, Home Economics, Geography, Logic and many others.  Additionally Heritage Intermediate offers a few Year-long Elective courses which include Band, Yearbook, Leadership and AVID.  Students are required to apply, interview and/or audition for a year-long elective class.

Our before and after school enrichment program consists of Mentally Activated Learning Labs (MALL).  Before and after school enrichment is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays during our scheduled sessions.  The MALL classes are designed for our GATE population, however ALL students are encouraged to get involved.  Some MALL classes include: Chess, Breakfast Club/Cooking, Cartooning, Battle of the Books, International Cooking and Computers.  Additionally, we have a variety of athletic teams which students can try-out for that include:  football, volleyball, soccer, basketball and track.

As a staff, we are excited to venture into the 2008-2009 school year.  Should you have any questions about our school programs, please do not hesitate to contact me at (909) 357-1345.
